From an early age I was driven towards questions of how and why we act as we do. As an undergrad at Ithaca College, I studied Applied Psychology, Politics and Philosophy. Although I was intrigued by questions of gender and identity, I ultimately left feeling dissatisfied with the way questions were asked without much thought towards action and solution. So upon completion of my degree I did what many disillusioned seekers do. I traveled around Europe and then moved to San Francisco. Massage school seemed the next logical step as a way to help people - without talking. I completed a 720-hour program at the National Holistic Institute and started my career as a bodyworker. I worked with clients in a Spa environment, a chiropractic office an acupuncture center.

The limitations of treating patients only with massage became apparent when people consistently came back with the same problems week after week. I personally began to experience debilitating pain from the demands of the physically involved massage work and the mounting stress from various events going on in my life. It was a fortuitous event then when a colleague turned me on to the work of Thomas Hanna. Within a few weeks, I was out of pain and completely entranced by the field, philosophy and techniques of Hanna Somatics. Read more >
